Summer Holiday Chaos!

Summer Holiday Chaos! School is almost over, and the holidays are approaching! However, all the fun could be ruined because at least 10,000 flights are getting cancelled all over Europe each day the strikes occur.

We have gathered all the essential information you need about airplane and airport strikes from Time Out, Reuters, Euronews, iNews and BBC News.

1,700 EasyJet flights have been cancelled in July, August and September, impacting over 180,000 passengers. EasyJet blames reduced airspace over Europe and ongoing air traffic controller strikes for the cancelled flights.

Many strikes are happening in the UK. In England, around 100 security officers and terminal technicians working at Birmingham airport will strike continuously starting on July 18th, causing many delays. Heathrow Airport security workers on June 23rd called off 31 days for strikes. For the rest of England, airports will be striking throughout July and going into August. Unite the Union has announced key worker strikes at Glasgow Airport after the OCS Group failed to improve its pay offer.

The next date for the 24-hour walkout is Tuesday 11th July. This will impact services aiding passengers with mobility issues, such as those using wheelchairs. Further strikes at both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports have been called off.

Countries in Europe including, Portugal, Belgium and Italy are doing airport strikes during this summer. This is because European airspace is being restricted by Russia’s war in Ukraine by up to 20%, the lack of crew members/staff or maintenance issues cannot be fixed due to the lack of handymen.

Strikes in Portugal are set to take place on July 30th-31st and August 5th-6th. Industrial action concerning overtime work is also set to take place on July 19th for an indefinite period, as well as on public holidays from August 1st, again for an indefinite period. Anyone looking to get a tan during their holiday might be facing disappointment. Ryanair pilots in Belgium will strike on July 15th-16th in demand of higher wages and better working conditions. This could affect around 140 flights from Charleroi airport, but it is unclear how many flights will need to be cancelled.

On July 15th, air traffic controllers will be walking out for 24 hours in Italy airports due to underpayment and working conditions. There will be no strikes between July 27th and Sept. 5thdue to a summer exemption.

Let us know about your summer holidays and whether they are getting affected by the strikes happening.
